Abstract

1,141,979. Epoxy resins. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 28 Nov., 1967, No. 54100/67. Heading C3B. Epoxy novolac resins are prepared by a threestage process: (1) a resole is prepared by condensing 1À5 to 3 moles of HCHO with 1 mole of an alkyl phenol, e.g. p-tertiary-butyl phenol, at elevated temperature in the presence of a basic catalyst; (2) from 0À7 to 2À1 moles of phenol is reacted with the product of (1); and (3) the resultant novolac resin is epoxidized, e.g. by reaction with epichlorohydrin. Step (1) may be carried out at 50‹ to 100‹ C. for 1 to 4 hours. Step (2) may be carried out in the presence of water at a temperature 90-105‹ C. or in the absence of solvent at a temperature from slightly above the softening point up to 200‹ C. The resins may be hardened using conventional curing agents.
