Abstract

1,141,779. Immersion lenses. NORTH AMERICAN AVIATION Inc. Aug. 3, 1966, No.34885/66. Heading G2J. In an immersion lens in which the detector 40 is cemented to the planar surface of a hyperhemispherical aplanat 30, in order to match the refractive indices of the cement and the lens a hemispherical insert 35 is provided of material which can be matched to suitable cements, the centre of curvature of the insert being at the aplanatic point of lens 30. Thus rays r 1 -r 6 proceeding from a lens 10 towards the second aplanatic point E of lens 30 are refracted in the latter towards the first aplanatic point and thus meet the bounding surface of insert 35 normally, and, by providing an anti-reflecting coating on the concave surface of body 31 before cementing hemisphere 35 thereto, the reflection at the interface may be substantially eliminated. Materials specified are germanium, of refractive index 4, for body 31; arsenic modified selenium devoid of sulphur, of refractive index 2.46, for hemisphere 35, with element 40 attached by heating and softening the surface of the hemisphere. Alternatively polycrystalline zinc selenide of refractive index 2.43 may be used, and the detector 40 cemented thereto with the arsenic modified selenium.
