Abstract

1,141,534. Projectiles. SWEDEN FORSVARETS FABRIKSVERK, DIRECTOR GENERAL OF. 17 May, 1966 [14 June, 1965], No. 21936/66. Heading F3A. A projectile 3 is provided with a rearwardly directed stabilizing tube 1 having integrally formed flaps 5 which open out under residual gas pressure as the projectile is fired from a barrel. The flaps are defined by weakening means such as longitudinal slots 4 and by transverse weakening recesses or grooves 6 which initially have an outwardly diverging cross-section and which close up to limit the amount by which the flaps open out. In another form, four flaps (9), Figs. 4 and 5, are formed each with a radial fin (10, 12) across which a transverse weakening groove (13) extends. In a further embodiment the tube (15) is fixed to a rearwardly tapering projectile. This tube has a bottom wall (16) with a central aperture (17). Six flaps (21) are formed by slotting the bottom and side wall at (18, 20). A radial fin extends from each bottom section and forms a " V " with a fixed fin (23) on the side wall, the two fins abutting in open position of the rear fin. In a modification of this latter arrangement, a piston (29) slides on a fixed guide sleeve (28). Residual pressure finds its way behind the piston so that it forces open the flaps (27) along with the fins (39). The piston is looked in open position by a spring ring (33) entering a groove in the sleeve, thus positively locking the opened flaps in position. The transversely weakening recesses or grooves may be at a slight angle so that the opened fins assume a position to cause rotation of the projectile.
