Abstract

1,141,207. Fibre-making apparatus. BABCOCK & WILCOX Ltd. 26 April, 1966 [27 April, 1965], No. 18251/66. Heading B5B. [Also in Division C1] A viscous fiberizable material is spread from a downwardly opening slot 22 into contact with the closely spaced surfaces of a pair of endless conveyer belts 24 and 26 which move in the directions shown and stretch the material into fibres as they diverge. The stretched fibres dry and/or decompose in the air and eventually pull free from the belts and fall on to a third conveyer belt 28 which, if desired, may carry them under infra-red lamps for further drying. The angle of divergence of the belts can be varied but is preferably acute and the belts may move as fast as 300 f.p.m. Fibres which can be made are of zirconia or alumina, in both cases using aqueous solutions, glass, or plastics.
