Abstract
1,141,182. Pipe couplings; securing workparts or mandrels. ANCIENS ETABS T.M.B.- J. TOBLER S.A. 15 Dec., 1966 [5 Jan., 1966; 22 April, 1966; 16 May, 1966, 10 Oct., 1966], No. 56258/66. Headings F2G and F2U. [Also in Division B3] A pressure fluid-operated work-clamping device comprises a hollow steel, rubber &c. diaphragm 21 of trapezoidal cross-section, the large base of which contacts the work 30. The fluid may be a gas or a liquefied gas, mercury, or a liquid metal at high temperature, or paraffined cellulose or methyl. The cross-section may include a right-angle. The device may be used for braking a shaft, for coupling shafts or pipes, or for anti-theft devices for a steering column which may be combined with a parking brake. In the chuck of Fig. 4, liquid coolant is supplied through a conduit 18 and evacuated through passages 26 through which any swarf which enters a chamber 19 may also be evacuated. The clamping pressure is produced by a push-rod 10, 11. Since the side 23, 24 can slide relatively to its mounting surface, the side 25 pivots about the apex 28 to increase the clamping pressure. In a modification, the side 23- 24<SP>1</SP> is free to slide instead of being retained by a collar 8. The mandrel of Fig. 5 is mounted between centres, which are moved axially to cause a piston 100 to produce the clamping pressure. A spring 171 assists in restoring the parts when unclamped. Alternatively, a threaded piston may be rotated in the mandrel body to produce the pressure. In a further modification, the side 23<SP>1</SP>, 24<SP>1</SP> is not restrained by a projection 26 and its supporting ring.
