Abstract

[Also in Division H2] In the method of compressing or crimping an insulating sleeve on to an electric cable terminal and/or joint, wherein the insulating sleeve is made of a plastics material and is cable of endurably gripping the cable by virtue of a property of the plastics material of being able to accept enduring deformation without substantial recovery at normal ambient temperatures, and wherein a sleeve is detached from a chain of insulating sleeves detachably attached together and temporary pressure alone or pressure and heat is applied to compress or crimp the sleeve around the terminal or joint, e.g. by cold-crimping, a reference mark may be applied to the sleeve to mark the cable. The plastics material may be a semi-rigid form of P.V.C. and the chain may be made flexible by part circumferential cuts between adjacent sleeves. A sleeve-applying machine loaded with a chain of sleeves may be used to feed the sleeves on to the cable and the crimping or compressing may take place before or simultaneously with the detaching. The machine may also apply the reference mark to the sleeve. The sleeve may be crimped around a ferrule, which is already present to crimp a terminal to the cable, and a free end portion of the sleeve may be left uncrimped.
