Abstract
1,140,781. Mixing by sonic/ultrasonic vibrations. SONIC ENG. CORP. 10 Jan., 1967 [13 J,an., 1966], No. 1300/67. Heading B1C. A fluid mixing device comprises a liquid whistle having an orifice 25p and a self-exciting vibratory element 40 the free end of which has a blunt end face 40f opposed to the orifice and of a size to block it. The orifice is preferably a rectangular slot and the vibratory element a blade (as shown) which may be tapered in width and/or thickness and is axially adjustable; the clearance between the blade and the orifice may vary from 0.004 in. for water to 0.025 in. and preferably 0.008 in. for very viscous liquids. The blunt free end of the blade may be formed as a transverse bar and at the end of its travel preferably just clears the orifice. The apparatus may be used for homogenizing liquids by sheer only without cavitation or turbulence, and with low power consumption, the pressure drop across the device being only about 10 p.s.i.
