Abstract
1,140,743. Coloured window. O'MEALIA RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT Inc. 19 March, 1966, No. 12194/66. Heading B6G. A coloured window comprises a rigid transparent or translucent backing sheet, a plurality of individual overlying coloured translucent plastics pieces bonded to the backing sheet and plastics metal divider strips between and bordering the coloured plastics pieces to simulate conventional lead strips, the divider strips being interlocked with grooves in the plastics backing sheet. The window may be made by forming grooves in one face of the backing sheet, filling the grooves with plastics metal projecting above the backing sheet to form divider strips, forming a peripheral wall around the periphery of the backing sheet, and pouring liquid colcured translucent plastics material into the areas defined by the divider strips and the peripheral wall in accordance with the desired pattern. In another method, coloured translucent plastics pieces are bonded to the backing sheet, grooves are formed between the plastics pieces and down into the surface of the backing sheet, and the grooves filled with the plastics metal. Alternatively grooves are formed in one face of the backing sheet, a compound is applied in and above the grooves to form dams and a wall is formed around the periphery of the backing sheet, liquid translucent plastics material is poured into areas defined by the dams and the peripheral wall, coloured translucent plastics pieces are applied to the liquid plastics material, the dams are removed, and plastics metal applied in the groove and between the coloured plastics pieces. A developed photographic emulsion may be disposed between the backing sheet and the coloured pieces. The developed photographic emulsion may be in the form of a film formed on the backing sheet or at least some of the coloured pieces. The film may be directly formed on the backing sheet or a separate film may be disposed between and bonded to the backing sheet and the coloured pieces. The coloured pieces may be bonded to the backing sheet by an intermediate plastics layer containing an ultra-violet retardant. The backing sheet may be formed of acrylic polymer, polymethylmethacrylate, glass fibre reinforced plastics. The liquid plastics material forming the intermediate layer may be a solution of unsaturated polyester dissolved in styrene monomer to which promoters such as cobalt accelerator or a catalyst such as methylethyl ketone peroxide in dimethyl phthalate is added. The plastics metal may be composed of 8% steel and 20% epoxy. The individual coloured plastics pieces need not be of the same colour throughout and may be further stained to provide contrast and shading. The window may be protected by the addition of a transparent resin layer overlying the entire window. In Fig. 6 a coloured window comprises a plastics backing sheet 26, a plurality of overlying coloured plastics pieces 29 bonded to the backing sheet through an intermediate layer, with plastics metal divider strips 31 between and bordering the coloured plastics pieces and interlocked with grooves in the backing sheet.
