Abstract

[Also in Division B2] A light guide comprises a branched, lightconducting element 2, embedded in, or surrounded by, light-insulating elements 3. The term "light-insulating element" is used to mean an element which will allow light to pass along the light-conducting element by complete internal reflection at the boundary between the lightconducting element and the light-insulating element, e.g. the light-insulating element may be opaque or may have a refractive index less than that of the light-conducting element. The lightconducting element may form an air-filled tube, or a tube through which helium is passed. The material of the light-conducting element maybe so treated as to give a continuous variation in refracture index transversely or longitudinally of the element. The light-conducting element maybe round, oblong, square, triangular, or pentagonal Fig 5 (a), (not shown). The layers and elements maybe formed by coating, by extrusion, by epitaxial growth, by sputtering, or by the opaque and transparent areas in a photographic negative.
