Abstract
1,140,695. Electrostatic generators. CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE. 28 April, 1966 [28 April, 1965], No. 18694/66. Heading H2A. In an electrostatic generator in which a graded potential is produced between spaced electrodes 36 by means of a voltage-distributing ring 38 of high resistance, arcing between the electrodes and the carrier ring is prevented by shaping the electrode, e.g. with a bevelled edge, so that it does not form a re-entrant surface where it joins the ring, and in addition, resistive or insulating beading 39 is placed over the edge of the electrodes. This material may be a silicone rubber elastomer, or an epoxy resin having a resistivity substantially lower than that of ring 38. This ring may be made of conductive glass or plastic. If desired, Fig. 6, not shown, the beading material may extend across the surface of the carrier ring, and this may, in turn be covered with an insulating layer. Alternatively the plate electrodes may, themselves, be of semiconducting material, e.g. of a mixture of carbon and rubber. The machine may be of insulating or conducting charge-carrier type.
