Abstract

1,140,526. Purifying polyamides. ICI FIBRES Ltd. 23 Feb., 1966 [19 March, 1965], No. 11692/65. Heading C3R. [Also in Division B1] A separator for molten polyamide/steam mixtures flowing from a pipe in continuous polymerization apparatus consists of a flared expansion outlet conduit for the pipe, the outlet conduit being internally coated with a polyorgano-siloxane to prevent accumulation of polyamide on the walls. Preferably the outlet conduit leads into the side of a vertical vessel having one or more outflow orifices at the bottom and a vented top. The siloxane is applied to the conduit in the form of a solution in an organic solvent, such as benzene, toluene, ether or acetone, which is subsequently evapoated. The continuous polymerization apparatus may comprise a stainless steel coiled tube with a separator in the form of flared outlet conduit fitted thereto. An aqueous solution of polyhexamethylene diammonium adipate containing 2% of carbon black or 0.3% TiO 2 is pumped therethrough, molten polyhexamethylene adipamide and steam issuing from the separator.
