Remote equipment is selected by transmitting a combination of frequencies comprising one or more "guard" frequencies and an "actuating" frequency. In one embodiment for obtaining remote meter readings, a combination of three "guard" frequencies, selected from a group of 100, selects the desired meter by means of tuned circuits and gates. A modulating signal comprising a sweep over a given frequency band is also transmitted, and this produces outputs from a series of tuned circuits in turn so as to scan a set of switches actuated by cams on the meter shaft. Other embodiments e.g. for switching on groups of appliances such as street lights or "off-peak" circuits are described in which a single "guard" frequency is transmitted together with an activating frequency modulated thereon. Transmission may be over telephone lines or over coaxial cable used for wired radio or television distribution. Some controlled devices may include radio or ultrasonic transmitters to activate other devices in the same group which have not got ready access to the main feed cable.
