Abstract

1,140,193. Purifying oil. UNILEVER Ltd. 25 Jan., 1967 [28 Jan., 1966]. No. 3893/66. Heading C5C. The proportion of acid contaminants in commercial glyceride oils and acid amides, esters, nitriles and salts is reduced in a continuous process by treatment with an alkaline liquid, wherein reaction between said liquid and the free acid is effected almost instantaneously by intimately mixing said liquid with the oil, and water-soluble reaction products are then washed from the reaction mixture by immediately thereafter causing it and an aqueous washing liquid to make innumerable random contacts with each other while flowing along tortuous paths through a bed of inert packing material. The alkaline liquid may be 0À3 N to 1À3 N sodium hydroxide in 10 to 25% excess of the stoichiometric amount, at a temperature up to 100‹ C. The washing liquid may be a solution of sodium chloride or sulphate or monosodium phosphate, and may also contain ethanol, propanol, tert-butanol, glycerol or glycol or mixtures thereof. The tortuous paths may be provided by a column packed with beads, saddles or rings; flow may be co-current or counter-current.
