Abstract

1,140,107. Inking apparatus. RESEARCH ASSOCIATION FOR THE PAPER & BOARD, PRINTING & PACKAGING INDUSTRIES. 12 June, 1967 [13 July, 1966], No. 31402/66. Heading B6C. [Also in Divisions G1 and G3] Changes in the thickness of an ink film on the roller system of a printing press are detected by using a transparent roller 1, rotating in contact with one of the rollers 7 of the press inking system, to pick up an ink film therefrom, and photo-electrically measuring the thickness of this picked-up film. A photo-conductive cell 16 mounted inside the roller 1 receives light from a lamp 17 through the surface of the roller. The light is attenuated in accordance with the thickness of the ink film, which is directly dependent on the film thickness on roller 7. The cell 16 is connected in a Wheatstone bridge circuit, Fig. 2 (not shown) with a balancing photoconductive cell 19 which receives light direct from lamp 17 and thus monitors changes in the lamp intensity. A microammeter (37) senses out-of-balance current in the bridge circuit and has a shunt capacitor to damp the meter and keep its response time longer than one revolution of the roller 1. This prevents marks on the roller surface from causing a meter response. A potentiometric recorder (41) may be used to record variations in the bridge current with time. In setting up the apparatus, the press is run until the ink film thickness on rollers 7, 9 is correct, as judged from visual examination of prints taken. The bridge is then balanced to zero the meter by adjustment of a diaphragm 20 in front of cell 19. Any out-of-balance thereafter results from deviations from the correct film thickness and a warning light or audible alarm may be incorporated in the circuit to indicate such deviations. The ink flow from the duct may be controlled using the bridge output. A number of cells 16 or pairs of cells 16, 19 may be mounted along the axis inside the roller 1 and a long tubular lamp 17 used for illumination, respective bridge and meter channels and a multi-channel recorder being provided.
