Abstract

1,139,446. After-treated polyvinyl alcohol. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 15 April, 1966 [15 April, 1965],No. 16510/66. Heading C3P. Polymers having repeating units of the formula in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> represent any two substituents or together with the nitrogen form a heterocyclic ring, or a quaternary salt thereof, are formed by reacting a polyvinyl alcohol with a compound of the formula ROCH 2 NR<SP>1</SP>R<SP>2</SP> in which R is alkyl and quaternizing if desired. The polyvinyl alcohol may contain comonomers, particularly vinyl acetate and the acetate groups may be removed after the reaction. Exemplified reactants are the N-ethoxymethyl derivatives of N-methyl aniline, morpholine, piperidine, diethylamine, dibutylamine, 4,4-dimethylpiperazine, and N-methyl cyclohexylamine, and quaternizing agents are alkyl p-toluenesulphonates, dialkyl sulphates, alkyl halides, and propane or butane sultone. Reaction with an alcohol reconverts the polymer to polyvinyl alcohol and a solution of the polymer containing an alcohol can be spun into fibres or cast as a film. The quaternary salts can be used as mordants, peptizers, sensitizers or anti-static agents.
