1442628 Photochromic materials H G HELLER 29 Aug 1974 [1 Sept 1973] 41233/73 Heading C4S [Also in Division C2] Photochromic compounds are of formula in which X represents oxygen or NR<SP>6</SP> where R<SP>6</SP> represents a hydrogen atom or an alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic group, Y represents a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl group, Z is a hydrogen or halogen atom or an alkyl or alkoxy group, R is a hydrogen atom or an alkyl or aryl group, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are the same or different alkyl groups or one of R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is a hydrogen atom and the other is an alkyl, aryl or heterocyclic group, R<SP>4</SP> represents an alkyl or aryl group and R<SP>6</SP> is a hydrogen atom, or an alkyl, aryl, alkoxy or aryloxy group. R<SP>6</SP> may for example be a phenyl, 2,4-dimethylphenyl, or 4-methoxyphenyl, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> may be methyl, ethyl, propyl, isobutyl, phenyl, 4-chlorophenyl, 4-nitrophenyl, or 3,4-dimethoxyphenyl group, Z may be hydrogen, chlorine or bromine or a methyl group, R<SP>4</SP> may be methyl or ethyl and R<SP>6</SP> a methoxy group. Specific compounds are exemplified. Detailed preparation is included wherein an aldehyde or ketone of specified formula is condensed with an ester of a succinic acid derivative of a specified formula, hydrolizing the halfester produced and heating with an acid chloride. Variations are described and Examples 1-6 include detailed preparations. The compounds are coloured by near ultraviolet radiation (e.g. 366-404 nm.) and reversed by green radiation (e.g. 514-550 nm.) from an argon ion laser. The compounds may be in crystal form in a rigid plastic matrix, or in solid or liquid solutions. Uses include information storage, display and transfer in holographic and other optical systems, in films or screens and microform production.
