1464603 Photochromic materials and uses thereof H G HELLER 2 July 1975 [31 July 1974] 33719/74 Heading C4S [Also in Division C2] The invention comprises photochromic compounds (I) and (II) in which A represents oxygen or NR<SP>4</SP> (where R<SP>4</SP> represents hydrogen, alkyl having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl having 5 to 12 carbon atoms, aralkyl having 7 to 9 carbon atoms, aryl having 6 to 14 carbon atoms, which may be substituted with one or more halogen or alkoxy groups having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or alkaryl having 7 to 22 carbon atoms); B represents oxygen or sulphur; R<SP>1</SP> represents a hydrogen atom, an akyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms or an aryl group having 6 to 14 carbon atoms; R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> are the same or different alkyl groups having 1 to 20 carbon atoms or one of R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>3</SP> is hydrogen and the other is an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or an aryl group having 6 to 14 carbon atoms which may be substituted with one or more halogen atoms and/or any combination of groups selected from C 1-20 alkoxy and C 7-22 alkaryl, or is a methylenedioxy group, X represents hydrogen, an alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, an aryl group having 6 to 14 carbon atoms or an aralkyl group having 7 to 12 carbon atoms; each Y is the same or different and represents a hydrogen or halogen atom, an alkyl or alkoxy group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms, or an aryl or aryloxy group having 6 to 14 carbon atoms, and their preparation, where A is oxygen, by reacting an aldehyde or ketone (III) or (IV) with a succinic ester (V) where R<SP>5</SP> is the residue of an alcohol, by a Stobbe condensation, hydrolysing the half-ester produced to form the di-acid, and then heating the said di-acid with an acid chloride, and where X is NR<SP>4</SP>, by reacting the corresponding compound, where X is oxygen with an amine R<SP>4</SP>NH 2 and heating the resulting half amide with an acid chloride or anhydride or by reacting the half ester from the Stobbe condensation with a compound R<SP>4</SP>NHMgBr and reacting the resulting succinamic acid with an acid chloride. The compounds of the invention develop colour when exposed to radiation in the near ultraviolet (e.g. 366-404 nm.) and the photo reverse process takes place in visible light optionally at 514-550 nm., or by heating. The compounds find use in information storage, holographic recording, telecopier devices using laser techniques and information display screens.
