Abstract

1,139,280. Moulding optical elements. EASTMAN KODAK CO. 20 Nov., 1967 [22 Nov., 1966], No. 52640/67. Heading B5A. [Also in Division C1] A plurality of optical elements are made from a microcrystalline inorganic powder by forming the powder into a stack of loosely compacted blanks with a non-compatible separator between each blank and heating and pressing the blanks until the material has a density of at least 99% of theoretical. The blanks are preferably formed by cold pressing, and may be made outside the mould or by placing a layer of powder 17 in the mould cavity, pressing, placing a spacer 19 upon the powder, adding more powder and pressing to form the next blank, thereby building a stack of alternating blanks and spacers. The spacers may be discrete sheets, foils of metal inert under the reaction conditions or a layer of colloidal graphite formed on the blanks before insertion in the mould cavity. The moulding pressure is preferably at least 9,500 p.s.i. and the temperature at least 932‹ F., the moulding being carried out in vacuo, and cooling in the presence of a noble gas, preferably argon. The optical elements may be flat discs or domes. Suitable inorganic materials are fluorides of calcium, lithium, lanthanum or strontium, zinc sulphide, oxide or selenide, cadmium sulphide, selenide or telluride, magnesium oxide, titanium dioxide and calcium telluride.
