Abstract

1,139,184. Variable-speed gear. PIAGGIO & C. S.p.A. 29 April, 1966 [15 May, 1965], No. 19024/66. Heading F2D. The speed ratio of an I.C. engine transmission comprising driving and driven expandable sheaves connected by a V-belt, is steplessly varied by (a) speed sensitive means, comprising centrifugal masses, which upshifts the transmission as the speed of the driving sheave increases, and (b) torque sensitive means effective to counteract (a) to downshift the transmission when the transferred torque is increased above a predetermined value. In Fig. 1, driving half-sheave 6 is axially movable to increase, or decrease, the diameter wrapped by V-belt 11, (a) by means of centrifugal masses 9 as the speed of the driving shaft 1 increases, and (b) by means of sleeve 2, which has a helical path 4 in which a pin 3 on the driving shaft runs, and which sleeve, above a value of torque which corresponds to the pre-loading at assembly of spring 8, abuts stops 10 on guides 5 to downshift the transmission. Preloading of the spring 8 may be obtained through a lost motion stroke of the sleeve 2. In Figure 2, (not shown), centrifugal masses 25 move helical ramps 20 on which rollers 20<SP>1</SP>, of a pitman 21 connected to the movable halfsheave 17<SP>1</SP>, run to upshift the transmission. A box 16, connected to axially-fixed halfsheave 17 and carrying toothed sections 14 which mesh with a pinion 13 on the driving shaft 12, is rotated by a transferred torque giving rise to an angular displacement of sectors 14, counteracted by pre-loaded springs 18, which sectors act on the masses 25 to return them to the centre to downshift the transmission.
