Abstract

1,138,967. Fuel elements. UNITED KING- DOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. 6 Dec., 1966 [20 Dec., 1965], No. 53803/65. Heading G6C. A machined transverse bracing grid for a fuel element cluster comprises a cellular plate having a central cell penetrated by a tubular member to form a hub, the plate and hub being secured together by mechanical means. As shown in Fig. 2, the hub comprises a tubular plug 2 and a sleeve 3, the plug penetrating the cellular plate 11 and being in abutment with its lower side at 4. The plug 2 is retained in the plate by the sleeve 3. A keyed connection (not shown) is made between the hub and the plate to prevent relative rotation. The plate is of stainless steel and has 36 cells for fuel elements located on three pitch circles, the cells having irregular contours (Fig. 1, not shown) to minimize the amount of neutron absorbing material and to give a large flow path for coolant through the grid. Each cell has three concyclic fuel element bearing surfaces. The plug 2 and sleeve 3 are of stainless steel and secured together by means of a fillet weld 18. The hub is secured to a central tie member 13 by means of rivets 17.
