Abstract
1,138,759. Shaft encoders. HITACHI Ltd. 24 May, 1966 [25 May, 1965], No. 23086/66. Heading G4H. Mechanical movement is converted to digital signals by a code plate, Fig. 3, comprising a single track sensed at circumferentially spaced points. At each angular position a different combination of four bits is produced. The four-bit signals may be converted in a gating circuit to a marking on one of ten leads. Two or more such code plates may be interconnected by gearing to give a decimal indication of the position of a shaft. In the form of Fig. 5 two tracks may be provided on a single disc, the inner one producing four combinations of two bits and the outer one having a pattern repeated four times to produce five combinations of three bits. Sensing may be photo-electric, electromagnetic or by contacts.
