Abstract

[Also in Division G1] In a course recording apparatus in which a stylus repeatedly marks a translucent chart to indicate the instantaneous position of a craft in at least one co-ordinate direction, the chart is movable relative to the stylus in the one direction and is provided at one edge thereof with a plurality of tracks 35 of digitally coded opaque markings which are adapted to co-operate with an equal number of photo-cells 36 connected so as to provide signals representing the coordinate, in the one direction, indicated by the position of the stylus relative to the chart, the chart adjacent the photo-cells 36 being illuminated on the opposite side thereof by the provision of a translucent member 39 having one narrow face 40 extending the whole width of the markings and another face arranged adjacent two lamps 37, 38, the member 37 being so shaped that light from the lamps is guided down the member to leave the narrow face 40 and impinge on the chart. The member 37 is preferably of glass or polymethylmethacrylate and is shaped to diverge from the face adjacent the lamps 37, 38 to span the width of the markings, and also to provide a converging arcuate path to the narrow face 40 which is parallel to the.plane of the chart. The tracks 35 are preferably coded in a Gray code, nine tracks being used for digital position signals. Further tracks may be used to control a computer associated with the apparatus.
