Abstract

1354103 Registering location and movement of articles PLESSEY CO Ltd 20 Aug 1971 [22 Aug 1970 19 Dec 1970 22 Dec 1970] 40530/70 60426/70 and 60732/70 Heading G4H The system disclosed in Specification 1,257,163 is modified in that the read head for encoded labels is adapted in use to be held in the hand and comprises a plurality of photo-cells and light sources, the light being caused to impinge on the label and the modified reflected beam being transmitted back preferably both with the aid of light fibres. In one embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) three detectors are placed at apices of an equilateral triangle, the width of the detectors being equal to the distance between each of them and equal to the width of a coloured (e.g. black) line on the label indicative of binary "0". Strobe marks are indicated as a white line three times the width of the detectors and binary "1" marks by black lines of the same width as the strobe marks. The output of the head as it is moved across the label in any orientation is taken to a logic circuit, Fig. 7 (not shown) responsive to the simultaneous sensing of a black line (binary 1) and to the sequential sensing of a black line followed by a simultaneous sensing of a white line (binary 0), the results are held in a shift register. In a further embodiment, Figs. 8, 9 (not shown) only two detectors are used which must be moved across the label with the adjoining line in a direction perpendicular to the coded stripes. Corresponding logic circuitry, Fig. 12 (not shown) is provided.
