Abstract

1,138,622. Hydrodynamic brakes. PERKINS ENGINES Ltd. 27 April, 1966 [26 May, 1965], No. 22283/65. Heading F2E. A hydrodynamic brake comprising a twopart easing 12A and 12B forming a stator having pockets or vanes 11A and housing a rotor 10 having coacting pockets or vanes 11B, incorporates a plurality of shutter members 16 pivoted at one end on the easing between the stator and rotor to form an adjustable iris, said shutters being moved to the open position, Fig. 2B (not shown), when hydraulic fluid is admitted to the casing to actuate the brake and being moved to the closed position, Fig. 2A (not shown), to reduce windage losses when the casing is empty of hydraulic fluid. As shown, the shutters are formed by arcuate metal plates, each having a pin 17 engaging in an associated slot 19 of a rotatable cam ring 18 to define an " iris "-type shutter. The cam ring is rotated by a rack 21 engaging a ring gear segment 20, said rack being moved to the left by hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical control means (not shown) connected thereto by a control rod 21C to open the shutters. A control rod extension 21B is coupled to a control valve 22 so that said rack movement permits entry of fluid into the casing. Movement of the rack to the right to effect closure of both the shutters and the control valve supply is effected by a spring 21A. The shutters can only be moved to their closed position when there is no hydraulic fluid in the flow path and hydraulic fluid cannot be admitted to the casing when the shutters are closed; said pins extending through co-operating slots (52) in the free ends of said shutters. The shutters are urged towards a closed position during brake release by a spring (57) acting between the other arms of the bell-crank levers but are maintained in the open position shown during brake application by a pair of hydraulic rams connected to a control valve (58) which also controls the admission of fluid to the machine through a supply valve (22A).
