Abstract

[Also in Division B1] In a heat exchanger a rigid wire mesh 3, inclined to the horizontal, has disposed above, and parallel to it, a similarly inclined row of horizontal finned tubes 2, the tubes and mesh being contained in a chamber 1 provided with a gas inlet 10 and an exhaust fan 11. Liquid supplied by troughs 4, whilst running down the mesh is lifted on to the tubes 2 by the gas stream drawn through the inlet by the fan, the liquid then running down tubes 2 to a vessel 6 from which it is recirculated by pump 8 and pipe 7. The exchanger may be used for:- (i) effecting a transfer of heat between the fluid contained in tubes 2 and the liquid supplied by troughs 4, which is subsequently lifted on to the tubes, or between the fluid contained in the tubes 2 and the gas drawn in from the inlet 10, or (ii) for condensing or evaporative cooling in which case the vapour to be condensed or the fluid to be cooled is caused to flow through the tubes while a coolant liquid is applied to flow down the mesh sheet and be transferred by the gas stream on to the tubes. The mesh 3 is preferably expanded metal so disposed that the longer dimension of its apertures is substantially parallel to the axes of the tubes.
