Abstract
1,138,090. Finned-tube heat exchangers. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 17 Nov., 1966 [2 Dec., 1965], No. 51563/66. Heading F4S. A heat exchanger assembly, e.g. an evaporator for a refrigerator, comprises a continuously coiled finned tube having a plurality of passes disposed in two parallel spaced apart planes. In the assembly shown in which the two planes are generally horizontal, Fig. 3 being a plan, two side walls 100, 102 support a continuous coiled and finned tube 104. Inclined openings 128 and vertical openings 124 in the walls 100, 102 respectively allow the straight portions 106, 108 and the bends 126, 122 of the tube 104 to pass through them. The inwardly directed fins 132, 130 of the upper and lower passes 108, 106 are positioned in abutting relationship (see also Figs. 4 and 5). An infra-red heater assembly 116 when energized removes frost formed on the fins of the tube 104. A modified assembly (Figs. 7-9) has adjacent upper passes (154) joined by bends (156) and likewise adjacent lower passes (144) by bends (146), the upper and lower passes being interconnected by a single bend (152). An alternative arrangement (Figs. 1 and 2) has a continuous tube (72) with finned lower and upper passes (74, 76) joined by bend portions (78) having outwardly directed fins (80) and a plurality of fins (82) on the inner peripheral surface of said bend portions.
