Abstract

1,137,922. Sound level monitoring. AEROPORT DE PARIS. 1 April, 1966 [5 April, 1965], No. 14602/66. Heading H4D. In a system for making measurements of ambient noise level and transmitting them to a remote point for recording, test signals for monitoring the operation of the system are transmitted after each measurement. For measuring noise at an airport, each of a plurality of measuring stations is connected to a central recording point by a telephone or radio link. At each station the transmission of measurement signals 60 is initiated when the output of a microphone exceeds a threshold amplitude 59, and is terminated after a predetermined period 61 or when the noise level drops below a predetermined value. Test signals 62 from a first test oscillator are then transmitted for a predetermined period 63 and permit monitoring of the overall operation of the measurement and transmission system. Test signals 64 from a second test oscillator may then be transmitted for a further predetermined period 68 for monitoring the operation of those elements of the system which follow the microphone. Alternatively, the order of the two test transmissions may be reversed, or the first tear. may be omitted. By comparing the signals 62, 64 as recorded the system-generated noise of the microphone and transmission system may be separately determined and the complete system may be calibrated. At the central recording point a multi-channel receiver is switched to supply signals transmitted from a selected measurement station to either a graphic recorder or a magnetic recorder or both. A talking clock is associated with the magnetic recorder. Details of timing and switching systems for applying measurement and test signals sequentially to the transmission system are given (Figs. 1, 3, 4, none shown). In a modification employing several microphones at each measuring station, a selector switches in whichever microphone first provides an output exceeding the threshold value.
