Abstract

[Also in Division Dl] A stenter, used in the treatment of sheet material, for example in annealing thermoplastic film, comprises supporting means which may comprise (Fig. 1), two longitudinally extending steel tubes 1, or a single member shaped so that the sheet material only contacts the edge portions of the said member, mounted on a base-plate (not shown), or (Fig. 3), an articulated endless rod 8 made up of hinged sections 9, and driven by a toothed wheel 11, sideways movement of the rod relative to the belt being prevented by a support 12; and two endless belt conveyers 2, one on each side of the stenter, and each bearing against the outer side of a tube, each belt being urged against the tube by resiliently mounted rollers 3, and support bars 4. The sheet material 5 is folded over the supporting tubes on each side of the stenter and gripped between the tubes and their associated belts. The stenter may be used for lay-flat thermoplastic tubing when the supporting means must be cantilevered from the take-off end of the stenter, and must be associated with slitting means. The support means and the belts may be formed with co-operating grooves and projections to assist in gripping the sheet material. Alternatively the belt may be provided with ridges or teeth in its driving surface, or a groove on the inside surface of the belt into which guide rollers or a guide bar can fit, may be used to prevent the belt moving in a vertical direction.
