Abstract
1,137,865. Lubricating; seals; pipe joints. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 29 March, 1966 [31 March, 1965], No. 13711/65. Headings F2A, F2B and F2G. [Also in Divisions F1 and G6] In a pump assembly (see Group F1) for circulating cooling liquid metal, e.g. sodium, potassium or a mixture thereof, in a nuclear reactor (see Group G6), the pump drive shaft 37, Fig. 5, is supported in a journal bearing 75 and a journal and a thrust bearing, 57, 58, Fig. 3. The bearing surfaces may be coated with a hard, non-ferrous metal alloy, and the thrust bearing may be of the Michell, roller or collar type. Liquid metal from the reactor is circulated through the bearing 75 via passages 79, 80 and through the bearings 57, 58 through passages 59, 60. Upward leakage of liquid metal past the bearing 75 is removed through passage 85. To prevent liquid metal from leaking into a vessel 30 a labyrinth seal 81 is provided. Any liquid metal leaking past the seal 81 passes into an annular space 90 where the liquid metal is caused to freeze by the cooling action of an inert gas, e.g. argon, circulated through an annular space 95 via passages 94, 96. A double gas seal 84 is provided. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown), the annular spaces 90, 95 are omitted and the inert gas is supplied to a lantern ring (83) beneath the double gas seal (84) and above a retaining plate (82), the gas being pressurized to a value greater than that of the liquid metal to assist sealing. A flange on the discharge side of the pump assembly is attached to a connector 66, Fig. 3, via a bellows 64 and a number of tie bolts 70 forming clearances 73, to permit relative thermal expansions and contractions. The connector has a frustoconical female portion (67), Fig. 2 (not shown), at its lower end which receives a complementary male portion (68) at the upper end of a discharge pipe (16), the two portions being secured together by cam-type clamps (69) operated externally of the reactor by a mechanical linkage.
