Abstract
1,137,681. Snap-action switches; cam-operated switches; variable resistors. C.T.S. CORP. 3 Jan., 1966 [4 Jan., 1965], No. 156/66. Headings H1N and H1S. A rotatable or rectilinearly movable cam 42 engages a cam follower portion 28b of a slidable spring contact member 28, compresses member 28, then releases it to cause it to snap into or out of engagement with a stationary contact 27 with its contact portion 28a, member 28 moving in a direction opposite to the direction of movement of the cam 42, Figs. 5B, 5C, 5D (not shown). Member 28 moves in between an insulating supporting member 30 and a conductive guide element 29 providing a switch terminal 32, Figs. 1, 3 (not shown), member 28 being indexed in its two stable positions by an indentation 35d, receiving the apex 28c of portion 28b, and an abutment 35c, both on member 30. Member 28 may be in onepiece or several pieces secured together, Figs. 4A, 4B (not shown), and may give change-over contact switching movement. The fixed contact 140, Fig. 10 (not shown), is integral with the housing and one side of the circuit is earthed. The rectilinearly movable cam 123, Fig. 8, is biased by a spring 124 against cam follower portion 121a, which maintains the contact portion 121b against stationary contact 125 in one stable position. The springiness of member 121 is greater than that of spring 124. The moving contact member 28 pivots on a fulcrum 45, Fig. 5A, to give a slight wiping action of the contacts 27, 28a; the fulcrum being elongated if desired, Fig. 10 (not shown), or two fulcra being provided. In the rotary embodiment, the drive shaft 23 also operates a variable resistance comprising an arcuate path 17, Fig. 2, which is a carbon film resistance element bonded or mechanically secured to base 15 and connected to two terminals 18. Alternatively, an arcuate wirewound resistance element is used. A movable contact member 21 connects path 17 to a collector ring 19 having a terminal 20, Fig. 1 (not shown).
