Abstract
1,137,518. Recovery of tungsten values. DOW CHEMICAL CO. 9 June, 1966, No. 25789/66. Heading C1A. High purity tungsten values are recovered as tungstic acid by treating a tungsten bearing ore or concentrate with a concentrated (30- 33%) solution of HCl or HBr in an alcoholwater mixture (water 0-70 volume per cent), at a temperature between 40‹ and 70‹ C. for 15 minutes to 4 hours using a ratio (equivalents) of HCl to WO 3 of at least 3. The alcohol used may be methanol, ethanol or propanol. The resulting solution is separated from any undissolved solid residue and the hydrogen halide concentration is then reduced, either by dilution, neutralization or heating to reflux, causing precipitation of tungstic acid. This is washed with aqueous HCl (6-12M) which may contain 0À05% HNO 3 . The resultant tungstic acid can be dried or converted by ignition to WO 3 . The tungsten ore may be ground or milled before use.
