Abstract

1471549 Aluminium halohydrates G G MERKL 12 Dec 1974 53850/74 Heading C1A Aluminium halohydrates (Al 2 (OH) 5 X where X corresponds to iodine, chlorine, bromine or fluorine) are prepared by first permeating highly pure (#99% purity) aluminium with up to 5 wt. per cent of mercury in the presence of a hydrogen ion source, and then contacting with aqueous halogen acid or with an aqueous medium into which elementary chlorine, bromine or iodine has been introduced, and recovering the resultant liquor containing said halohydrate. The contacting preferably occurs at less than 200‹ F., and the preferred shape of aluminium is rod-like having ¢ inch diameter; the hydrogen ion source may be inorganic or organic acid. An alcohol-soluble product may be obtained by the use of water and alcohol. When spray dried, at least 99% of the product passes a 325 mesh.
