Abstract

1,136,842. Polygalactomannan derivatives. GENERAL MILLS Inc. 10 March, 1966 [24 March, 1965], No. 10641/66. Heading C3U. [Also in Division D2] As novel compounds, quaternary ammonium polygalactomannan ethers may be prepared by etherifying a polygalactomannan gum, suitably in the presence of a strong alkali catalyst, with a compound of formula where R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are the same or different and represent alkyl, substituted alkyl, alkenyl, aryl or aralkyl groups (R 1 and R 2 may together form a cyclic group), R 4 is an epoxyalkyl or halohydrin group and Z- is an anion. In examples, guar and locust bean gums are reacted with 2,3-epoxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, and guar gum is reacted with 3-chloro- 2-hydroxypropyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, in aqueous NaOH. The products are added to paper pulp (see Division D2) as drainage improvers, and for this purpose may have a D.S. of 0À025-0À20.
