Abstract

1,136,801. Sorting mail. H. M. POSTMASTER GENERAL. 9 Feb., 1966 [15 Feb., 1965], No. 6497/65. Heading B8A. A sorting apparatus comprises an endless delivery conveyer 1 inclined about the longitudinal axis over a portion thereof past a series of groups of collecting conveyers 7-10, 11-15 extending at right angles thereto and communicating therewith through a plurality of discharge doors D7-15 arranged along the lower edge of a framework supporting the conveyer 1. The doors are arranged in combinations e.g. D7/8, D8, D8/9 individual to each collecting conveyer e.g. 8 and have one large door D8 individual to each combination and a small door D7/8, D8/9 in common with the next adjacent combination, i.e. each end combination has one long D7 and one short door D7/8 and each intermediate combination has one large D8 and two small doors D7/8, D8/9. The length of the large end doors D7 is equivalent to a large and a small intermediate door D7/8, D8 and the overall length of each combination is longer than the longest article to be sorted and equal to the distance between centres of the collecting conveyers plus the length of a small door. The doors of each combination which may be opened simultaneously or in sequence from the upstream end, are operated by means (not shown) controlled through a memory by an operator loading the delivery conveyer 1 and discerning the destination of the individual articles. The operator may be replaced by a device for scanning the articles and feeding their destination automatically to the memory. The discharge doors form part of a side plate which includes fixed sections 22 over the gaps between groups of collecting conveyers and in which the upstream edges of the long doors except the first in each group and the upstream edges of all fixed sections, except the first, are fitted with extension plates (25) extending towards the collecting conveyers to assist in discharge of the articles. The framework supporting the delivery conveyer has downwardly extending guide surfaces 20 terminating just above the tops of sidewalls 17 which contain the articles discharged on to the collecting conveyer. The centre line of each door combination is offset upstream of the centre line of the collecting conveyer.
