1,136,440. Train detector. COMPAGNIE DES FREINS ET SIGNAUX WESTING- HOUSE. 21 Dec., 1966 [5 Jan., 1966], No. 57208/66. Heading B7N. An arrangement for detecting the presence of a metallic mass, e.g. a train, comprises a number, e.g. three transistor oscillator circuits 1, 2 and 3 of similar form but operating at different frequencies arranged such that their respective tuning coils 20, 21; 51, 52 and 70, 71 are disposed in line adjacent and parallel to a railway track and connected such that the output signal of each oscillator controls the generation of a signal in the following oscillator and the last oscillator controls the generation of a signal from an output stage 82. The presence of a train wheel adjacent a tuning coil stops the associated circuit oscillating with the result that the following oscillators are cut off and the output stage, in the absence of an input signal, signals the presence of a train. The detection zones of the respective tuning coils overlap and the overall length of the arrangement is greater than the length of a train vehicle wheel base. The tuning coils are wound on ferrite rods 100 and supported on a plate 109 beneath the head of rail 107. The coils are partially screened by a metal bracket 108 and the associated circuits are embedded in a block 110 of epoxy resin disposed beneath the plate 109.
