Abstract

A hose reel comprises a drum journalled on a hollow stationary water-supplying axle 1 in which a valve 4 is slidable between a closed and an open position by limited relative rotation. between a thread driven with the drum and a thread held against rotation together with the valve spindle 6, and an externally threaded pawl wheel 30 engaging the spindle is locked against rotation by one or another of two sets of pawls 32 which are disengaged from the wheel after one or more turns of a thread driven by the drum in one sense or the other. One or more compression springs may be used to maintain valve closure. The valve may be arranged to open with or against the water pressure.
