Abstract

In a web-fed rotary printing or embossing machine having a printing or embossing cylinder 5 mounted on a wheeled sub frame unit 4 and a co-operating impression cylinder 31 both cylinders may be swung towards and away from each other through mounting the unit 4 of the cylinder 5 in a cradle 2 pivotable about and axis 6 whilst mounting the cylinder 31 line an cradle 3 pivotable about a shaft 26. The cradle 2 comprises two spaced arms each of which is connected to the main frame of the machine through an hydraulic power unit 8, 9. Movement, of this cradle into the non-engagement position is limited by slot and pin arrangements 22; 21 associated with each arm whilst cradle movement into the engagement position is limited, firstly through the engagement of an abutment 17 carried by each arm with the round surface 18 of a common shaft 19 and, secondly, through the engagement of the same abutments 17 with a flat 20 on the shaft. That first of these limits is cmployed when setting the machine up for web processing. The second becomes operative when processing commences. The arms of the cradle 3 carrying the impression cylinder 31 are pivotally attached to eccentrically mounted members 25 fast on the shaft 26, which is manually actuable in order to provide engagement of cylinders of diameters different from those shown. Screw-jacks 36 are used to pivot the cradle 3 about the shaft 26, any backlash being taken up by hydraulic units 42 also connected between the frame 1 and the cradlearms 23. Wedges 39 slidable by a handoperable screw -thread 40, are located between each screw-jack and the associated cylinder bearing block 33 for the purpose of aliging the impression cylinder in parallel relationship relative to the cylinder 5. The cylinders may be readily, released from their.. mountings.. The Specification refers to a multi-machine in which a plurality of the machines of Fig. 1 are aligned in operative association.
