Abstract

1,136,125. Rotary-piston L C. engines. FICHTEL & SACHS A. G. March 18, 1966 [March 20, 1965; July 31, 1965], No.11966/66. Heading F1F. In a rotary-piston I. C. engine of the n and n+1 lobe type, the planetary motion of the piston 1, Fig. 1, is controlled by gearing of the conventional kind at one end of the piston and a surface 13 on a bearing race 12 for a power-output shaft 4, upon which surface during normal rotation of the piston the peripheral surface of a circular recess 14 within the other end of the piston rolls without slipping, any oscillation of the piston about its axis of rotation arising from backlash in the gearing being suppressed by frictional damping owing to the surfaces aforesaid temporarily sliding relative to each other. The gearing includes external gear-teeth 9 on a further bearing race 8 for the shaft 4 and internal gear-teeth 10 on the piston, the races 8, 12 being fixed in end-walls 2, 3 of a housing for the piston, which housing has a peripheral wall 7. Needle-rollers 11 are situated between the races 8, 12 and the shaft 4, and further needle-rollers 6 support the piston upon an eccentric 5 attached to the said shaft. In a second embodiment, Fig. 2 (not shown), control of the motion of the piston and frictional damping is improved by the bearing race whereon the external gear-teeth are provided also having an external surface (116) that during normal rotation of the piston is in rolling contact with an internal cylindrical surface (115) in the piston, slipping of one surface relative to the other when the piston oscillates being effective to suppress the oscillations. It is indicated in the Specification that the beforementioned surfaces that are normally in rolling contact with each other may be replaced by surfaces that are in sliding contact with each other, and that the surface 13 may be formed on the housing.
