Abstract
1,136,079. Crimpable bicomponent filaments. COURTAULDS Ltd. 5 April, 1966 [5 April, 1965], No. 14279/65. Addition to 1,089,799. Heading B5B. Crimpable bicomponent filaments are made by melt-spinning collaterally through each of a number of jet holes, (a) a polyester copolymer derived from ethylene glycol and a mixture of terephthalic and isophthalic acids containing 85 to 95% by weight of terephthalic acid, and (b) a nylon or crystalline polypropylene, to form a number of bicomponent filaments, stretching the filaments whilst simultaneously heating the filaments to above the second order transistion point of both polymer components, but only to the extent that substantially all the filaments are "necked", and quenching the filaments. The filaments may be stretched to a draw ratio of at least 4.5:1. The filaments may subsequently be heated to over 70‹ C., thereby realizing the crimp in the filaments. Alternatively the filaments may be formed into a textile fabric or a garment which is then heated to a temperature of at least 70‹ C. to release the crimp in the filaments.
