Olefines are polymerized or copolymerized with each other and/or diolefirie in the presence of a catalyst comprising a reaction product of one or more transition-metal compounds and a macromolecular compound having oxygencontaining functional groups but substantially free of hydroxyl groups, this product being activated by a metal, a hydride or an organo metallic compound of a Group I, II or III metal of the Mendeleef Periodic Table. Preferred functional groups are carbonyl, carboxyl and oxo groups, and the preferred macromolecular compound is a polyester, polycarbonate, polyether, polyacetal, polyacrylate, polymethacrylate, polyvinylketone or polymer derived from an ether and a vinyl acetal. The transition metal compound may comprise one or more halogenated derivatives of a Group IVA, VA or VIA metal, such as halides, oxyhalides and/or alkoxy-halides of titanium and vanadium. The activator may be a trialkyl aluminium or aluminium alkyl halide. In the examples, polyethylene, a copolymer of ethylene and propylene, or a terpolymer of ethylene, propylene and dicyclopentadiene, were prepared using one of the following catalyst systems: (a) titanium tetrachloride and/or vanadium oxychloride reacted with the condensation product derived from 2,2-bis-(phydroxyphenyl - propane) and phosgene, followed by activation with tri-n-propyl aluminium, di-ethyl aluminium chloride or tri-iso butyl aluminium; (b) titanium tetrachloride reacted with the condensation product of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol, followed by activation with tri-isobutyl aluminium; (c) titanium tetrachloride reacted with ethyl polymethacrylate, poly - (2,2 - bis - chloromethyl propyloxide), poly - (phenylene oxide), polyvinyldecalyl ether, polyvinylisobutyl ether, or polyvinylbutyrol, followed in each case by activation with tri-isobutyl aluminium; (d) vanadium oxychloride reacted with polyvinyl acetonylketone, followed by activation with tri-isobutyl aluminium; (e) titanium tetrachloride and vanadium oxychloride reacted with a polysulphone, followed by activation with tri-isobutyl aluminium.
