1,197,986. Catalysts for polymerizing alkylene oxides. SEITETSU KAGAKU CO. Ltd. 27 Oct., 1967, No. 48992/67. Heading C3R. [Also in Division B1] Alkylene oxides of formula in which R 7 represents a hydrogen atom, or a methyl, ethyl, phenyl, vinyl, chloromethyl, bromomethyl, methoxymethyl, allyloxymethyl or phenoxymethyl radical, are polymerized in the presence of a catalyst composition made by reacting the product of a partially hydrolysed aluminium alkoxide with at least one organometallic compound of formula or in which MII represents Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd or Hg, M A II represents Be, Mg, Ca, Sr or Ba; M B II represents Zn, Cd or Hg; MIII represents B or Al, and R 4 , R 5 , R 6 , R 8 and R 9 each represent hydrocarbon residues having 1-6 carbon atoms, in specified proportions at - 50‹ to +150‹ C. Examples describe the polymerization of ethylene oxide, propylene oxide and a mixture of propylene oxide and allyl glycidyl ether in variable conditions. The presence of a tertiary amine having at least one C 1-6 hydrocarbon group attached to nitrogen often increases the degree of polymerization.
