Abstract

113,508. Griffith, C. O. March 6, 1917. Metallic sulphides and other compounds, obtaining. - In the production of sulphides, an anode consisting of a plate or compressed block of an ore or concentrate is employed in a solution of sodium or other chloride. Sulphur is supplied (1) by a layer or block of sulphur on or near the metallic cathode, (2) by adding a thiosulphate or other sulphur compound to the electrolyte, or (3) by decomposition of the anode; in this case, reagents such as the chloride of the anode metal, thiosulphates of calcium and sodium, or solutions of sulphur or sodium sulphate, may be added. When methods (2) and (3) are employed a diaphragm is prefrably provided. The cathode may be the cell wall or a plate or block of metal, ore. &c. A temperature of 50-60‹ C. is suitable. In the cathode compartment, caustic soda can be obtained if a sulphur compound is added to the anode compartment only, or sodium sulphide if sulphur or a sulphur compound is added to the cathode compartment. Stibnite may be concentrated by fusion before use as anode. Antimony sulphide obtained by the process may be purified by solution in alkali and precipitation by an acid ; it is then dried at a low temperature.
