Abstract

9806. Palas, H., and Cotta, F. Dec. 12, A.D. 1898, [date applied for under Sec. 103 of Patents &c. Act, A.D. 1883]. Alkaline hydrates; copper sulphate; sulphates.- To obtain these by electrolysis, the cathode compartment of any electrolvtic cell contains a cathode which will be unacted upon, such as an iron plate, and a solution of sodium or potassium sulphate, preferably of a strength of 25‹ Be., and a temperature uf 70‹ C. The anode compartment contains a solution of the metallic sulphate required, at a density and temperature corresponding to the greatest electric conductivity. The anode is formed of the metal of which the sulphate is required. In the case of copper, this may be a copper plate or strip, copper waste, chips, or ores, or residues of copper pyrites. The difference of potential should be 2À5 to 3 volts. In the cathode compartment caustic alkali forms, and may be easily separated from the residual sulphate ; while in the anode compartment the solution becomes enriched by additional metallic (e.g. copper) sulphate.
