Abstract
1,134,929. Tractor-trailer compressed air braking systems. WESTINGHOUSE BREMSENUND APPARATEBAU G.m.b.H. 30 Nov., 1966 [3 Dec., 1965], No. 53554/66. Heading F2F. In a compressed-air braking arrangement for tractor-trailer vehicles comprising a compressed air supply line 6<SP>1</SP> between the air reservoir 1<SP>1</SP> of the vehicle and a first coupling 8<SP>1</SP> for the trailer and containing a pressure control valve 5<SP>1</SP>, a brake control line 10<SP>1</SP> joining the air reservoir with a second coupling 12<SP>1</SP> for the trailer, and a pressure blocking relay valve 9<SP>1</SP> connected to the brake control line 10<SP>1</SP> and further connected to a point in the air supply line located between the pressure control valve 5<SP>1</SP> and the first coupling 8<SP>1</SP>, a shut-off device 22 is connected immediately after the pressure control valve 5<SP>1</SP> in the supply line and before the point of connection of the relay valve 91 with that line, the arrangement being such that the trailer braking system is connected between the first and second coupling 8<SP>1</SP>, 12<SP>1</SP> respectively so that braking of the trailer is maintained regardless of the condition of the shut-off device or couplings. Should the trailer be uncoupled when standing on a slope after the handbrake valve 4<SP>1</SP> has been operated, the shut-off device 22 must be closed and the couplings 8<SP>1</SP> and 121 must be open, the shut-off device 22 being closed first. The trailer remains braked becuase when the coupling 8<SP>1</SP> is opened the chamber 18a<SP>1</SP> of the trailer control valve 18<SP>1</SP> is vented and due to the known construction of the valve 18<SP>1</SP> automatic braking is effected. If, on the other hand, the coupling 12<SP>1</SP> is opened first, the chamber 25 in the pressure blocking relay valve 9<SP>1</SP> is immediately vented and the inlet valve 26 is opened to provide automatic braking of the trailer. The pressure control valve 5<SP>1</SP> and the shut-off device 22 may be combined to form a single structural unit as also can the first coupling 8<SP>1</SP> and the shut-off device 22.
