Abstract
1294987 Valves; dual circuit brake systems WESTINGHOUSE BREMSEN UND APPARATEBAU GmbH 6 Nov 1970 [22 Nov 1969] 52848/70 Headings F2F and F2V A tractor dual-circuit braking system incorporates a relay valve 11 which serves as a trailer brake valve and acts to control the pressure in a trailer direct brake pipe 18 in response to pressure changes in the two circuits I, II of the tractor braking system. As shown in Fig. 2, the relay valve 11 has connections 36, 41 for pipes 12, 13 of the circuits I and II: connection 36 communicates via holes 37, 38 with chambers 39, 40, respectively, above a relay piston 20 and connection 41 communicates via a hole 42 with a chamber 43 below a relay piston 21. The two relay pistons 20, 21 are coaxial and include respective seats 22, 29 which co-operate with valve cones 33, 34 of a double valve body 32 to form an inlet valve 22, 33 and an outlet valve 29, 34. A pipe 14 leading to a storage tank 5 of the brake circuit II is connected to the valve 11 at a union 44 and communicates via holes 45, 46 with a chamber 47 and a pipe 15 leading to the trailer brake pipe 18 is connected to the valve 11 at a union 50 which communicates via a hole 49 with a chamber 48. When a tractor brake valve 3 is actuated compressed air flows from storage tanks 2 and 5 into brake cylinders 4, 4<SP>1</SP> associated with the front and rear axles of the tractor respectively. The pressures in the two circuits I, II being introduced into the chambers 39, 40 and 43, respectively, act to move the relay pistons 20, 21 slidably axially towards one another. As a result the outlet valve 29, 34 closes and the inlet valve 22, 33 opens and the storage tank 5 is thereby connected to the line 18 via a line 6, a pressure control valve 7, a line 14 and chambers 47, 48 of the valve 11. The inlet valve 22, 33 opens until the forces acting on the relay pistons 20, 21 are in equilibrium whereupon the double valve 22, 33 and 29, 34 comes into the lap position. If one of the brake circuits is not pressurized the pressure in the other circuit will still cause the valve 11 to operate. A pipe 10 serves as an automatic trailer brake pipe which when broken causes the trailer to be braked and if this occurs while the tractor brake is actuated the outlet valve 29, 34 remains closed and the inlet valve 22, 33 remains open to evacuate the pipe 18 via the inlet valve 22, 23 and the pipe 14. In the relay valve 11 of Fig. 3 a relay piston 54 is in two sections 60, 61 and an advance is achieved in the trailer brake as compared with the towing vehicle brake. A compression spring 62 acts on the piston section 61 and the initial compression of the spring 62 may be altered by means of an adjusting screw 65. An inlet valve 56, 68 and an outlet valve 66, 69 are provided which are respectively opened and closed in actuation of the valve 11 by the pressure in either or both circuits I, II. The arrangement is such that a steep pressure rise occurs in a chamber 80 to bring about the aforesaid advance.
