Printing-surfaces.-In the production of printing-plates of celluloid or similar material by pressing a sheet of the material between a matrix mounted in a recess in the table of a press, and an inflatable mattress carried by the follower of the press, the mattress is brought into contact with the sheet while the rigid margins of the table and follower are spaced apart to allow ready escape of gas and liquid exuded from the material. The matrix G obtained by pressing a sheet of lead, vulcanite, or fibre on to the type, engraved plate, or other original is mounted in a recess in the hollow press table A provided with pipe connexions for the supply of hot and cold fluid. The mattress comprises a rubber sheet H secured to the edges of a recess in the press follower B. A pipe N is provided for the supply of compressed air to the mattress. In operation, the sheet S of celluloid or similar material is placed on the matrix G, and the follower B is then lowered, by turning the crank-shaft C, until the rubber sheet H engages the sheet S which enters slightly into the recess of the follower. Steam or other hot fluid is then admitted to the table A to soften the sheet Sand compressed air is admitted to the mattress to press the sheet S on to the matrix. The air pressure is then released and cold fluid is admitted to the press table to cool and harden the sheet S. For making curved printing-plates, a curved matrix may be employed.
