1,134,515. Generators operating by electromagnetic interaction with fluids. SIEMENSSCHUCKERTWERKE A.G. 18 April, 1966 [17 April, 1965], No.16975/66. Heading H2A. [Also in Division H1] A magnet coil for producing a transverse homogeneous field, e.g. for a magnetohydrodynamic generator or a particle accelerator is composed of one or more wound layers whose longitudinal sides are parallel to each other and whose ends are bent up into a saddle-shaped configuration, each winding comprising justaposed turns wherein within a layer each turn has the same length as every other turn with such turns coplanar along the longitudinal sides (Fig. 1, not shown). The windings are applied one upon the other in each of two supports 21, 22 (Fig. 2) slotted to receive the windings, which are superimposed on slot base 23 and are contained by perpendicular slot walls 24, 25. Insulating layers may be interposed between the windings, and at the apices of the coil the outermost slot wall may be angled acutely to the slot base while the innermost slot wall may be angled obtusely thereto, the sum of the angles being 180 degrees; the slot walls at the apices being parallel to the slot base along the longitudinal sides (Figs. 3, 4, not shown). In such a coil the magnetic field is at a maximum in the central plane of a coil comprising two windings, but for a maximum in planes above and below the central plane, the slot is of rhombic cross-section (Fig. 5, not shown) with the outer slot wall at an obtuse angle to the base and the inner wall at an angle thereto along the longitudinal sides, the sum of the angles being 180 degrees. The windings may be fixed by plastic sealing compound and the winding supports may be of solid aluminium or copper with the slots machined or cast therein, and with cooling ribs or circulation passages. The windings may be of superconducting wire, e.g. niobium-zirconium or niobium-tin in wire, tape, or cable in plastic sheathing, with cryostatic cooling of the device; and the solid winding supports function as short-circuiting rings for protection during changes from the superconducting to the normal state.
