Abstract
113,432. Chinese-American Co., (Assignees of Whaley, W. B. S.). Jan. 27, 1917. [Convention date]. Inductor-alternators; magnetos, driving.-Each cylinder may have two sparking-plugs 27, 116, Fig. 1, the plug 116 being connected to a magneto 110, and the plug 27 to an electric ignition device 42 arranged on the side of the cylinder. The magneto 110 and the ignition devices 42 are driven from a shaft 85, which carries eccentrics &c, 98, 99, 100 arranged to actuate the air valves. The shaft 85 is driven from the crank-shaft 2 by means of a shaft 56, Fig. 7, carrying a helical gear 67 adapted to be moved along the shaft 56 by a hand-wheel 63 operating a screw 62. When the hand-wheel 63 is turned to move the gear 67 downwards or upwards from the neutral position shown in Fig. 7, the air valve 86 is opened and the shaft 85 is turned to set the ignition devices and the operating-mechanism for the valves 32 in correct position for forward or reverse running of the engine. At the same time, an electric contact 74 is moved to close the electric circuits of the ignition devices 42. Fine adjustment of the valves 32 and of the ignition devices may be obtained by slight movement of the hand-wheel 63. The ignition devices 42, Fig. 1, have reciprocating armatures 45, Fig. 5, and are arranged to spark when a latch 44 on an operating-rod 43 is tripped by a stop 46, which may be adjusted by a cam 47 to vary the time of ignition.
