Abstract

1,134,227. Brush-holders for dynamo-electric machines. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 Nov., 1965 [17 Nov., 1964], No. 48116/65. Headings H2A and H2E. The brush-holder comprises a tubular housing 1, of insulating material, having a rim 3, 4, of which the portion 4 is higher than the remainder, and has a slot 5. A brush 9 is slidably mounted in the housing 1, and is separated from a metal plate 7 by a compression spring 10. The plate 7 is retained by two projections 6 extending inwards from the rim 3, but it has two recesses in its edge so that by rotation the recesses may be aligned with the projections and the plate may be lifted past the projections. The plate 7 has a radially-projecting tag 11 which is frictionally gripped between the limbs of a bifurcated terminal 12, extending through the slot 5 and attached to a current supply wire 13. The slot 5 has a width only slightly greater than that of the terminal 12, and is located so that the plate 7 is locked when 11 and 12 are connected, so that the terminal 12, and hence the current supply, must be disconnected from the plate 7 before the plate can be removed from housing 1. It is thus impossible to remove plate 7 and brush 9 while current is flowing through them. As a further protection, a flexible insulating cap 14 is provided, having an extension 15 in which the terminal 12 is a tight fit. To gain access to the plate 7 (for renewal of brush 9), the left-hand side of cap 14 is raised until it is free of rim 3, and then the extension 15 is pulled to detach terminal 12 from tag 11. The liveterminal 12 remains inside cap 14. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 958,198.
