Abstract

113,407. Bell, G. Aug. 27, 1917. Torpedo nets; submarines, trapping and destroying.-Relates to nets intended to be towed between two ships, and consists mainly in providing them with a pair of horizontal cables capable of being adjusted to various depths beneath the net. In the form shown. the net 1 is carried bv floats 2 and the horizontal cables 7, 8 are suspended by separate cables 11, 12 guided along each other and along the nets by loops 14, and wound in opposite directions round two separate drums 4, which are mounted around the float 2 and are adjustably rotated by means of rods inserted in holes in their flanges 5; ratchets prevent unwinding. The net is held in a more or less vertical position by anchors 9, and is towed by booms 18 on the bow of the ships 17, which are protected at the side by extensions 19 of the net carried by telescopic or other booms 21. The cables 7, 8 are intended for catching mine moorings and submarine periscopes, and the net 1 for floating mines and torpedoes.
